Walking into a gym for the first time can feel intimidating. Here's how to start simply and build a routine you can stick with.

Walking into a gym for the first time—or returning after a long break—can feel intimidating. You may wonder where to start, which equipment to use, how often you should exercise, or whether everyone else already knows exactly what they are doing.

At Spartan Fitness of Columbia, we believe getting started should be simple.

Start With a Goal

Before worrying about the perfect workout, think about what you actually want to accomplish.

  • Lose body fat
  • Build strength or muscle
  • Improve your overall health
  • Have more energy
  • Move better
  • Prepare for a sport
  • Stay active as you get older
  • Simply establish a consistent exercise routine

Having a clear goal gives your training direction.

Don't Try to Do Everything at Once

One of the biggest mistakes new gym members make is trying to completely change their lifestyle overnight.

You don't need to train seven days per week or spend two hours in the gym.

For many people, consistently exercising three or four days per week is a great place to begin. As your fitness improves, your routine can grow with you.

The most important workout is the one you can consistently come back and do again.

Learn the Basics

A balanced fitness program will usually contain some combination of strength training, cardiovascular exercise, and mobility or movement work.

You don't need dozens of exercises. Learning a handful of basic movements and gradually improving them can take you a long way.

Track Where You're Starting

Progress isn't always visible in the mirror or on the bathroom scale. Your strength may improve. Your clothes may fit differently. Your endurance may increase. You may begin moving or feeling better during everyday activities.

Having a starting point makes those changes easier to recognize. Spartan Fitness offers InBody body-composition testing for members who want additional information to help establish a baseline and monitor their progress.

Ask for Help

Nobody walks into a gym already knowing everything. If you're unsure how to use a piece of equipment or simply don't know where to begin, ask.

Spartan Fitness also offers fitness assessments and personalized program design by appointment for individuals who want additional direction with their training.

Just Get Started

You don't have to be in shape before joining a gym.

The gym is where you go to get in shape.

Whether you're beginning your first fitness journey, returning after years away, or looking for a new place to train, you are welcome at Spartan Fitness of Columbia.

Start where you are, stay consistent, and give yourself time to improve.

We'll see you at the gym.
